EU-Turkey relations were boosted in the mid-1990s, when economic ties were upgraded and the 1995 Customs Union Agreement came into effect. Its benefits were widespread. The benefits on welfare and its growth and employment stimulus, and the fact that Turkey is little by little integrating into a European economic model, are not often spoken about.
Samuel Doveri Vesterbye is the ENC’s Managing Director and is making occasional media appearances to share his expert views on issues, mostly related to Turkey. In this present article, he argues that the current Customs Union should be reformed in order to maintain and boost EU-Turkey relations – both economically and politically.
